The real name of Kusal Perera is Mathurage Don Kusal Zenith Perera. He was born on 17 August 1990. Kusal Perera is an international Sri Lankan cricketer. He plays all forms of cricket for the Sri Lanka national cricket team, and is currently one of the permanent top-order batsmen across all formats. He was a key member of the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 winning team.

He scored an unbeaten 154 against South Africa in the first Test at Durban in 2018 and added 79 runs for the last wicket with Vishwa Fernando in the fourth innings of the Test match to snatch victory from South Africa’s hands. That innings was named as the second best Test innings of the decade by Wisden in 2018 and also won the award for the best Test performance for 2020 from Cricinfo.

Kusal Perera was named as the captain of the Sri Lankan team, ahead of their One Day International (ODI) series against Bangladesh in May 2021.

Kusal Perera married his long-time partner Kalani on 6 March 2020 at the Waters Edge Hotel in Battaramulla.

Kusal did his graduation from the Kottawa Dharmapala Maha Vidyalaya, and also attended the Royal College Colombo, representing the latter in the prestigious Royal-Thomian annual cricket tournament. Kusal Perera was a right-handed batsman at the young age of 14, but later made up his mind to become a left-handed batsman. The change comes from Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya – his childhood idol and hero – hence the changed batting stance.

He made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in the 2014 IPL season, playing for the Rajasthan Royals.

Before the start of the 2019 IPL season, he was approached by the Sunrisers Hyderabad team to replace their former captain David Warner, who was banned for the ball-tampering scandal against South Africa. However, he turned down the offer as he was dedicated to playing domestic league matches in Sri Lanka during this period and wanted to make a Test return to the Sri Lanka during this period and wanted to make an ODI return to the Sri Lankan cricket team for the upcoming series against the West Indies in June 2020. Later, Alex Hales was called up to replace Warner for the 2020 IPL season after Kusal Perera declined.

He is known to be a quick scorer, and can hit the ball very hard, similar to the batting style of former Sri Lanka legend Sanath Jayasuriya. In a first-class match, he scored 332 runs from 271 balls, a domestic record.

He was named as the captain of Dambulla’s team for the Super Four provincial tournament in March 2017. He was then also named as the captain of Dambulla’s team for the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament.
He was named as the vice-captain of Kandy’s team in the SLC T20 League in August 2018. In November 2020, he was selected to play for Kamilla Warriors in the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League. He was drafted by the Kandy Tuskers in October 2018 for the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League.
