Seeing his interest in cricket, his father enrolled him in a cricket academy where he honed his skills and worked hard.
Soon He was noticed by the BBL Selectors and got a chance to play in the Big Bash League Tournament. He made his Twenty20 debut for the Sydney Thunder on 24 January 2019 against the Perth Scorchers in the 2018-19 Big Bash League season. Later Gilkes made his List “A” debut for New South Wales on 30 September 2019 against Western Australia in the 2019–20 Marsh One-Day Cup. He made his first class for the r New South Wales team on 1 November 2019 against Southern Australia in the 2019–20 Sheffield Shield season.
