He made his Twenty20 debut for Sydney Sixers on 26 December 2021 against Sydney Thunder in the 2021–22 Big Bash League season.

Due to his Performance in Domestic cricket, he gets a chance to play for Australia Team. Murphy made his Test Debut for Australia on 9 February 2023 against India in the 2023 Border Gavaskar Trophy. In his Test Debut match, Murphy took 7 wickets for the Australia team at the VCA stadium in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. Murphy was selected in Australia’s squad for the 2023 World Test Championship against India Which was held in England.
