He loves cricket since his childhood, He started playing cricket at very young age. He did his schooling in Chennai where he played cricket with a tennis ball as a wicket-keeper, and batsman at the age of 13. But after practicing for some time, at the age of 17, Chakraborty decided to quit cricket and started his further studies according to his career plans.
He completed his higher studies and worked as a freelancer for two years, after which he left his job at the age of 25 and took up cricket professionally. But this time He started his cricket career as a fast bowler but due to his Knee Injury he became a spin bowler. After that, He started playing domestic cricket for the Tamil Nadu team.
Chakravarty made his List “A” debut for the Tamil Nadu team against the Gujrat team at Chennai in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 20 September 2018. After some time He made First-class debut for Tamil Nadu in Ranji Trophy on 12 November 2018. Played well in domestic cricket He got a chance in the Indian premier league.
In December 2018, Varun was bought by the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) Tournament at the price of Rs. 8.4 crores. In his Ipl debut he was not so good for that reason In 2020 IPL Auction He was released by the Kings XI Punjab and then He was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2020 Indian Premier and he took his first five haul wicket in the IPL, for 20 runs, against the Delhi Capitals.
