Mohammad Imran Tahir is a South African former international cricketer. He was born on 27 March 1979 in Lahore, Pakistan. Imran is a spin bowler who mainly bowls the googly and is also a right-handed batsman. Tahir played for South Africa in all four formats of the game, but cited Twenty20 Internationals as important.

On 15 June 2017, Tahir became the first South African bowler to take eight wickets in an ODI, and also the fastest South African bowler to reach 102 ODI wickets (59 matches). He is currently South Africa’s leading wicket-taker among spin bowlers in ODIs and T20Is respectively.

On 17 February 2018, Tahir became the fastest South African to reach 50 T20I wickets. Against New Zealand on 4 March 2018, he recorded the most economical figures by a South African spinner in an ODI, taking 2 for 17 in 11 overs.

He became the fourth South African bowler to take a hat-trick in ODIs on 3 October 2019. He announced in 2019 that he would quit ODI cricket after the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Joining Surrey in 2019, he represented his 9th English county club, thus setting a new record.

He is widely known for celebrating by running after taking every wicket, earning him the nickname The Marathon.

Imran Tahir was born and brought up in Pakistan. Growing up there, he learned to play cricket. Being the eldest brother, he started working as a retail salesman in Lahore’s Pace Shopping Mall at the age of 17 for a meager salary to support his family. His fortunes changed when he was selected during trials to represent the Pakistan Under-19 cricket team, eventually developing into the Pakistan A team on a few tours. However, he failed to convert in the next stage.

He started playing county cricket in England but did not stay there for long. He then moved to South Africa, where quality spinners were always on the lookout. In South Africa, they played domestic cricket for 6 years and were “face-to-face for the first two years”.

As well as his first-class career in Pakistan, Tahir has also played for Yorkshire and Middlesex in county cricket as well as Staffordshire in the Minor Counties Cricket Championship.

While Tahir has represented the Pakistan Under-19 cricket team and Pakistan A, he has not been able to win full international respect for Pakistan. In 2004, at the age of 25, Tahir became a resident of South Africa. He is married to South African woman Sumaiya Dildar, and has represented her since he became eligible to play for South Africa in April 2008 after completing his 5-year residency requirement. Tahir was a member of Hampshire’s 2010 Friends Provident Trophy winning team, taking 2/55 from 11 overs in the final against Sussex. Tahir scored his career highest score of 78 not out in a County Championship match against Somerset on 28 August 2010.

For the 2011 season Hampshire signed Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis to replace Tahir for the season. Tahir represented Warwickshire for the 2011 season, and then represented Hampshire again until 2015.

Tahir made his 101st first-class appearance in the 2008/2010 SuperSport Series when the Titans played the Lions. On 9 January, Tahir was called up to the South Africa squad for the Test series against England, however was recalled 2 days later after Cricket South Africa revealed that he was not fit to play.
